Clark Quay

UPDATE (CAA 1 Jan 2005)

Clark Quay (The Cannery) will be shut down for renovations soon. Many of the toy shops there have already moved out, or are in the midst of moving out. Do check back with this page on the whereabouts of the relocated shops.

Introduction

Clark Quay IS the Toy Mecca of Singapore. What started off as a fortnightly flea market circa 1996 became a permanent weekend toy bazaar. Toy collectors and sellers gather here every Sunday to trade. Usually, you can find the latest toys and anime/comics/manga/movie merchandise selling at competitive prices.

The interior of the Cannery

If there's any place you need to go if you are hunting for toys or collectibles, this is the place to be.

Over the years, many of the stall holders eventually took up permanent retail space within the Cannery, one of the five converted buildings that stand on Clark Quay. Most of the toy shops are located on the second level of Clark Quay

Besides the stalls that line up on the outer perimeter of the building, there are also temporary weekend stalls set up within the Cannery.

The best time to visit Clark Quay is on Sundays, whereby most of the shops will be opened and the corridors lined with weekend hustlers.

Other Information

Word has it that the Cannery will be closed soon for major renovation works by January 2005. That may spell the end of Clark Quay as THE toy bazaar. There's a possibility that rental might increase after the renovation, when the property developer decides to "gentrify" the estate. Some of the tenants had already moved out, while some shops are holding clearing out sales. Come next year, there's a high chance that the shops will scatter to the suburban malls, or shopping malls on the fringe of the city where rentals are cheaper. There's a possibility that "Sunshine Plaza" may become the next place where toy collectors may gather, given the number of hobby shops there.
